The weirdest moment was when I discovered a book of erotic stories written by beloved children’s author Roahl Dahl, titled Lust, for 6€ in the ferry shop*. Overall though, this ferry journey, despite bumpy beginnings, has been a total success.
*Should I have bought it?
In slow travel, you have to embrace when things go wrong. It’s about having an adaptable mindset (something my wife and I are currently struggling with – we like things to happen as planned). It’s about enjoying the journey AND the destination.
I didn’t think I would enjoy the journey as much as I did. But this journey began by sitting on the top deck to watch the ship leave the harbour, was followed swiftly by mojitos and board games, then, after Julie caught up on some work and I fell asleep in a chair, we reconvened at the fancy ship restaurant where we enjoyed fine dining by sunset.
I’m writing this blog watching the last red light of the sun as it dips behind the horizon. I’m sipping on some mint tea.
I think it just goes to show that even when things feel like a disaster in the moment, you can give it a bit of time and, sooner or later, a singer will be singing I wanna dance with somebody in a bar while you sit in the buzz of a fine muscadet and reflect on all the good things in your life.
And guess what? There are a lot of good things.
See you next time.
