Bloganuary #8: Complaining as a creative practice

I’m short of time, so here is a short blog post!

I have started The Artist’s Way and I’m trying to be serious about it. What that means is I have been getting up early to write three pages of ‘brain drain’ words in a notebook every morning. These are the ‘Morning Pages’ that a lot of people swear by.

You are meant to write these every day of the course for the entire twelve weeks. If I’m doing them right, I should be saying they are VITAL to a successful creative practice very soon. Watch this space.

I didn’t think I would be up at 7:30am writing*, but that’s who I am now. I get points for being extra dedicated, right?

* this coming from someone who barely functions before 10:30am (aka coffee time).

So far, these pages have mainly consisted of me complaining that my hand hurts, complaining that I am cold, complaining that I am hungry, and complaining that I am tired. If I have read the book correctly, that is exactly the kind of stuff I should be writing in my morning pages.

Luckily, I am an EXPERT in complaining. That’s why I was a film reviewer for so long – I loved to be give the space to complain professionally (and it was always a disappointment when I received a film that was decent and entertaining. What on earth was I supposed to write about then?).

I’ll stop there before I start complaining.

See you tomorrow!

I write a morning page (I can’t manage more than that so kudos to you) using my favourite fountain pen and ink, and my writing is indecipherable which frankly doesn’t matter as it’s just drivel 😆 As you point out, however, that is entirely the point, and I’ll be interested to hear how you feel it works for you. I find it’s a good way of ‘running the tap’ to get stale stuff out of my brain at the start of the day.

I’m Rhi

I’m just a writer trying to live slower and be more observant of my feelings.

I am also a bit silly.

This blog is a mishmash of all that.
