What are your thoughts on the concept of living a very long life?
There is a recurring character I have created, who has popped up in multiple TTRPG games I have run, and might pop up in a children’s book I write in the future. The character is a wizard, who has gained immortality through various magical means.
But immortality doesn’t mean he stops aging. His back hurts a lot. Stairs get more and more tricky with each passing year. He cannot go out as much, so he gets bored. His eyesight gets worse and he struggles to read. He’s grumpy, and his ancient, powerful magic is mainly used to heat up soup, the only thing he can eat after a while because his teeth are so weak.
Long life doesn’t really mean anything if it isn’t a healthy and vibrant life.
I guess the idea of living too long isn’t something I’m particularly down with at the moment. I can’t help but think Anne Rice’s Interview with a Vampire. It’s book full of immortal vampires who have lived for centuries and find with each passing year they grow more out of touch with the world around them. They find it harder to adapt to knew technologies and beliefs, and as they slowly fall more and more out of sync with society, they go a little bit mad.
Wow, I didn’t expect my feelings to get so dark.
To finish on a positive note, it would be awesome to see future cities with fancy technologies. Assuming AI doesn’t destroy the world before then. Oops, went dark again. Sorry!
